Laptop won’t boot – Dell?

Hi there, Friend’s Dell laptop just died one day. No response to power button, he smelled burning (we know heat is a problem in many laptops, perhaps especially Dell). He put in hours with Dell support, sounded like motherboard. Verified not hard disk by putting it in external HD USB unit (HotDrive) and can access files. So he bought motherboard and I installed. Now, three LEDs come on (Num, Caps, Scroll Lock), then Caps Lock flashes 9 times, then everything off. Have taken out and carefully reseated everything that can be – HD, memory (two 256MB; tried both in both slots and individually), processor, etc. Got a new 256MB stick, but still have the same LED flash pattern. With no memory in, two LEDs stay on solid (no blinking). With no processor, all three LEDS on solid. Since this MB responds different issues, and original MB did nothing, don’t think MB is the problem. Could it be processor? Feel like I’ve eliminated RAM, MB. But processor original. Any suggestions / experience? Thx!

If it was hot and there was burning smell, it could be more of a meltdown than just the motherboard. Could have been all parts or parts of parts. I wouldn’t trust memory or cpu or anything that was so close to the power. Did you get new fans too?
You might want to check the old memory in another laptop…
also, I would try making sure that the keyboard is in correctly as well as put the whole case back together as well as the cover on the memory compartment before I tried booting it up again. Get all the screws in well, as much as a pain as it is taking them all out over and over again…
